Why Does God Allow Trials?

1 Peter 1:6-7…In this you greatly rejoice, though now for a little while, if need be, you have been grieved by that the genuineness of your faith, being much more precious than gold that perishes, though it is tested by fire, may be found to praise, honor, and glory at the revelation of Jesus Christ. -- 1 Peter 1:6-7

What purpose could God possibly have in allowing us to face various trials?

First, God allows trials to test our faith. He does not test our faith with the expectation that we will fail. James 1:2,3…My brethren, count it all joy when you fall into various trials, knowing that the testing of your faith produces patience. Instead, His intention is for us to learn greater dependence on Him and have increased assurance in His power over the world. Unproven, untried faith is not worth much. How do we know what we can endure in life if our faith has not been tested?

The second reason the Lord allows us to face difficulty is to display His sustaining power for His children. As we’ve seen before, everyone—Christians and non-Christians—go through painful periods in life. By drawing on God’s strength during these times, we can become a powerful testimony to those who do not know Christ. Psalm 55:22…Cast your burden on the LORD, and He shall sustain you; He shall never permit the righteous to be moved.

Third, our trials equip us for effective work on behalf of others. When we go through hardship, we become specifically equipped. Then, we can empathize with and encourage others who may face a similar ordeal. This principle was an important part of the apostle Paul’s active ministry. 2 Corinthians 1:3,4…Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of mercies and God of all comfort, who comforts us in all our tribulation, that we may be able to comfort those who are in any trouble, with the comfort with which we ourselves are comforted by God.

Finally, God permits trials in our lives to purify us. Hardships put pressure on us deep down inside. That’s where we often try to hide sin, shameful habits, and areas of neglect. The Lord knows these things must be brought to the surface. Titus 2:14…who gave Himself for us, that He might redeem us from every lawless deed and purify for Himself His own special people, zealous for good works. We must face them openly and honestly and allow the Spirit’s redemptive power to work if we’re to become mature believers.
God has a purpose for every challenge He allows to come your way. Stand firm and allow Him to accomplish His will in your life—by whatever means He deems necessary. James 1:4…But let patience have its perfect work, that you may be perfect and complete, lacking nothing.

What trial are you facing today? Write it down, face it and pray for God’s strength and wisdom to go through it!
