Beth Emunah Drash, September 2019
This week’s readings are all about new beginnings. All about God’s commission!
All of Deuteronomy is the retelling of God’s covenant to his people. Now Moses (God’s mouthpiece to His people) is giving his final instructions to all of the people entering into the land. All that are gathered… It included everyone standing before God—from the greatest to the least—the heads of tribes, elders, officers, the men and women, the little ones, and the outsiders in your camp…from that day forward and for all time.
Giving them a commission, standing before God, each of them to cross over into the covenant of Adonai. Why? In order to confirm you today as His people. God’s covenant to all people! To Israel and to those who dwelled among them. A picture of the Kingdom to come.
Such a momentous occasion! This covenant promised that God would establish Israel and those standing by them as His own people and that He would be their God.
The wonderful parallel that I saw in our Brit Hadassah is what binds us together as messianic believers. Jew and gentile alike. God’s promise to all fulfilled in Yeshua Remember, God’s covenant is an everlasting covenant. God’s eternal plan for us all and Yeshua is the fulfillment of that plan, the fulfillment of that covenant that has no end.
Yeshua said that all authority has been given to me in heaven and on earth. All through the Gospels, Yeshua proclaimed the work that was being done was the will of the Father, doing His Fathers business. Matthew 28:16 is the first time that the Yeshua now proclaims that this authority now rests on Him. The prophets spoke of this very thing…
Daniel prophesied this in Chapter 7: verse 14 which says “Dominion, glory and sovereignty were given to Him that all peoples, nations, and languages should serve Him. His dominion is an everlasting dominion that will never pass away, and His kingdom is one that will never be destroyed. And Isaiah 9:5 and 6 a familiar passage to us all reads, “For to us a child is born, a son will be given to us, and the government will be upon His shoulder. His Name will be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, My Father of Eternity, Prince of Peace. Of the increase of His government and shalom there will be no end—on the throne of David and over His kingdom—to establish it and uphold it through justice and righteousness from now until forevermore.
With our belief in Yeshua and all authority given to him, how will we prepare ourselves to take possession of the new covenant? To put away the old and put on the new. Now we come into the high “holy” days, with the knowledge of Yeshua the messiah in our hearts. What is this commission we read in Matthew 28, this message to us as a community. What is God through the work of the Spirit commissioning us to do? This is the season to reflect on these things. To share in the covenant promise of God. To walk in the land!
God made an everlasting covenant with His people that is continues in Yeshua. Why? That we may live! And Yeshua, the author and finisher of our faith proclaimed, If you love, they will know that you are mine. “And remember, that I am with you always, even to the end of the age”.
